EXETER >> Police are continuing to investigate after offensive graffiti was left written at a public library, followed by an apology letter from the suspected juvenile vandals.

On March 3, staff at the Exeter Community Library were told by a patron that someone had draw a pentagram, a swastika and some unreadable words in the parking lot with white foam. Police determined that the foam was shaving cream and physical evidence was recovered for processing, police said.

The Exeter Fire Company was requested and responded to the library to wash away the drawings.

Exeter Community Library Director Mallory C. Hoffman posted the following statement on the library’s website: “This act of vandalism on the property of the Exeter Community Library was senseless, hateful and hurtful, and we condemn this cowardly action. Our library is a place of inclusiveness, open to all people from all walks of life, and we will not tolerate this type of behavior.”

On March 6, library staff found a letter in the book drop box that police said was authored by “three irresponsible and stupid teenagers.” The letter apologized for the drawings in the parking lot and included $50 inside.

The Exeter Township Community Library has accepted the apology from the individuals that committed the crime, police said.

Exeter Police, however, are still investigating the incident as an active criminal case. The department said the case will remain open until the guilty parties come forward or are identified through investigation.

Police are asking that anyone with information on the identity of the three suspects contact Crime Alert Berks County or Exeter Township Police at 610-779-1490.
