Hamburg 8th grader Emelia Adam recently competed at Twirl Mania hosted in the ESPN Center in Disney World, Florida, brining home four medals.

One hot day in July 2016, Emelia was twirling in the gym. Nothing unusual for Emmy, she does this every day. But that day she received an email from Twirl Mania announcing that she was invited to compete in the Twirl Mania Gold Invitational on President’s Day weekend in Disney World, Orlando, Florida. As you can imagine she screamed with delight. What an honor! This competition was an international one, where the best of the best twirl. Emmy was invited!

“What does this mean? How do we do this?” thought her parents, Tamra and Jeff Adam of Hamburg. Fundraising was the answer to these questions. This is an awesome opportunity so the fundraising began. Thanks to our supportive and generous community, Emelia earned her way to Florida where she certainly made magic!

Wednesday and Thursday were spent experiencing Epcot and Magic Kingdom. This is where they met up with Emelia’s coaches, Anna Bryant and Casey Bryant from Maryland.

Thursday afternoon they took a break to register Emelia for the competition and prepare for the events on Friday and Saturday but were able to returned to Magic Kingdom to ride their favorite ride, Seven Dwarfs Mine train.

Friday morning began very early. Emelia twirled all day Friday and Saturday. These days were extremely busy but Emelia found time to qualify too march in the parade through Magic Kingdom. Yes she had to try out for the experience. Unfortunately she was unable to actually march in the parade due to the competition event at ESPN. After she finished twirling for the day, we hurried back to Magic Kingdom to catch the tail-end of the parade where many twirl friends were marching. We met up with another twirl family and the kids had a blast until closing.

Emelia competed with girls and boys from everywhere. There were people from Japan, England, Canada, Puerto Rico as well as many other places. There were some familiar faces but many were new. At this point Emelia knew that she twirled and had fun but did not know any placements. Awards would be announced Sunday evening.

The weather was beautiful and warm so they spent the day at the Blizzard Beach water park to pass the time while waiting for the results. The awards ceremony was scheduled to start around 5 p.m. at the ESPN center, but only started around 8. The ceremony went way into the evening ending around mid-night. With the last two events to be announced Emelia and her teammate, Michaela Dettinger, Exton, PA waited. Finally it was her event.

“Emelia Adam 2nd place,” the announcer stated. She placed very well in this experience. Very proudly she accepted her awards on the podium. 2nd in the Advance Miss Twirl Mania. This was a three part event including, modeling, solo twirl and strut. Bursting with pride the family ran to congratulate Emmy!

In addition to this, she placed 3rd in Advance Best Appearing Modeling, 8th in Advance Strut, 10th in Advance 2 baton, and 4th in Beginner 3 baton.

Emelia’s teammate, Michaela Dettinger was next to be announced. She won her Advance College Miss Twirl Mania which was and awesome experience for Emelia as well. “Seeing your practice buddy win is as good as winning yourself,” praised Emelia.

All-in-all she did a fabulous job and was coming home with a large trophy and four awesome medals.

Monday was spent packing for the journey home and then back to make a few more memories in Magic Kingdom.

The family traveled home Monday and arrived back in Hamburg late Tuesday evening.

As they reflect on this magical experience they are so thankful. Emelia is busy preparing for the start of this 2017 twirling season. She has some big competitions in the next few weeks and months including qualifying for Nationals in July.

Emelia will be smiling and twirling. Again a HUGE thank you to everyone who helped! What an awesome and magical experience for all!
