POTTSTOWN >> Police responded to the scene of a reported shooting Monday night at the corner of Oak and North Charlotte streets.

Details were sketchy as police typically do not comment on the details of an incident while in the midst of investigating it, and Monday night was no different.

Check back with The Mercury on Tuesday for more details as they become available.

However, there are a few things we can report.

The incident was reported to the dispatch center at 9:33 p.m.

Twenty minutes later, a truck with a tower spotlight was dispatched from the fire company to better illuminate the scene.

An onlooker watching the police work said he was on Spruce Street, one block away, and he heard “six distinct shots,” but put the time of the shots closer to 9:45 p.m.

He also indicated a male was taken away in an ambulance shortly after police arrived “and his leg was all wrapped up.”

However, there is no official confirmation of that observation.

A woman answering the phone at the Pottstown Memorial Medical Center Emergency Room said she could not issue any condition report on a shooting victim, adding “but thanks for calling” before hanging up.

The number of cones the police placed – almost always an indication of the location of a spent shell casing – numbered at least six along Oak Street on the east side of North Charlotte Street.

On the west side of North Charlotte, on the northwest corner of Oak Street, another eight cones were placed on the steps and sidewalk in front of the twin convenience stores there, as well as at least one inside of one of the shops, possibly more.

At 10:15 p.m., police received another call for a woman found in the street two blocks away at North Hanover Street and Jefferson Avenue, but that turned out to be un-related to the shooting call.
