HARRISBURG >> The accolades continue to pour in for the Boyertown Area High School girls basketball team.
State Reps. David Maloney, R-130th Dist., and Marcy Toepel, R-147th Dist., presented House of Representatives citations on Wednesday to each member of this year’s PIAA State Class 6A Girls’ Basketball Championship Team – the Boyertown Area High School Bears.
“It is a true honor to recognize the Lady Bears on their outstanding accomplishment of winning the state title,” Maloney said. “In fact, just this week Boyertown senior Abby Kapp, who averaged 15.5 points-per-game this past season, was named to the 2016-17 All-State Girls Basketball team. Just really an amazing group of athletes.”
Toepel and Maloney, both graduates of Boyertown Area High School, praised the team on its amazing season to the applause of the entire House chamber.
“It was their tenacious defense that enabled them to persevere through a tough first half and regroup with a string of scoring in the second half to seal their victory,” Toepel said. “As a former member of the Boyertown High School girls’ basketball team, I know how games can ebb and flow and if you can just keep within striking distance, victory is always within your grasp.”
On Friday, March 24, the Lady Bears capped off their championship season with a 46-35 win over North Allegheny High School in the Class 6A final for the second state title for the school in just 10 months. The boy’s baseball team grabbed the state 4A title in June.
Also earning state honors this week was team coach Jason Bieber, who was named Class 6A Coach of the Year for his outstanding leadership of the team.
The legislative districts Maloney and Toepel represent include the communities in the Boyertown Area School District.
