Rock the Block
At the same time, in Riverfront Park and numerous places throughout the borough, the
annual Rock the Block spring cleanup
will be ongoing.
From 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., a dozen community organizations will join forces for a second year in a row with Habitat for Humanity of Montgomery County and Pottstown CARES and work on properties and streets in the 300, 400 and 500 blocks of Beech, Cherry and Walnut streets.
Pottstown CARES community cleanup day is a partnership of The Hill School, the Borough, the Pottstown School District, Montgomery County Community College, Tri-County Chamber of Commerce and Lowes.
In addition to the Pottstown CARES organizations, Rock the Block enlists volunteers from Genesis Housing Corporation, Matt Green at Glocker and Company Realtors, Mosaic Community Land Trust, Phillies Fire Company, Pottstown Fire Department and Victory Christian Life Center.

Earth Day in Pottstown

In addition to volunteering for Habitat Montco projects, Pottstown CARES participants will be working in the MOSAIC community gardens on Walnut Street and Chestnut Street. They will be cleaning up litter in various Pottstown “pocket parks” and along Armand Hammer Boulevard as well as planting trees.
And don’t forget the Pottstown Community Arts group is going to be out cleaning up the lot on the southeast corner of King and Manatawny streets where a new Welcome to Pottstown sign will be painted.
Bark for Life of Pottstown

Hazardous Waste Disposal
It might not be your ideal idea of how to celebrate Earth Day, but it is certainly appropriate to gather your
household hazardous wastes and dispose of them properly
.
That happens from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Indian Valley Middle School in Harleysville and is thanks to the Montgomery County Recycling Program and the first of six scheduled for this year.
The county will receive toxic and flammable household chemicals for proper disposal. Acceptable items include gasoline, oil, kerosene, turpentine, paint thinner, oil paint, stains, varnish, pool chemicals, herbicides, pesticides, antifreeze, caustic cleaners and solvents, mercury, thermometers, flares, fire extinguishers, lead acid batteries, rechargeable batteries, fluorescent tube light bulbs, CFL bulbs, mini propane canisters, and electric oil filled heaters.
Not accepted are electronics, appliances, asbestos, explosives, ammunition, medical waste, radioactive waste, smoke detectors, items containing Freon, or tires.
Trail of Beers
If all of that activity in the morning has you worn out and looking for some refreshment, you might consider heading down to St. Michael’s Park in Mont Clare.
That’s where Pottstown’s own Sly Fox Brewery will host its Celebration of the Schuylkill River Trail and the release of this year’s batch of SRT Ale, sales of which benefit trail maintenance and expansion.
The event is ongoing from 2 to 8 p.m. and features music by Frog Holler and Chestnut Grove, and the Sunflower Food Truck and Uncle B’s BBQ.
Proceeds of the event benefit the Schuylkill Canal Association which operates and maintains the Locktender’s House and Lock 60 a vestige of the Schuylkill Navigation System.
Music of America
And if you’re not exhausted by then, you can head up to the historic State Theater, 61 N. Reading Ave. in Boyertown for
a free concert of American songs by the Coventry Singers
.
Selections include patriotic music such as “America the Beautiful” and “Battle Hymn of the Republic,” traditional American folk songs including “Shenandoah” and “Every Night When The Sun Goes Down,” and gospel and hymn tunes including “We Shall Walk Through the Valley in Peace” and “Simple Gifts.”
The Coventry Singers, a choir of about 40 voices, is entering its 45th year providing music to the Pottstown area. If you can’t make the Saturday concert, they will perform again Sunday at 3 p.m. at Cedarville United Methodist Church, 1092 Laurelwood Road in North Coventry.
