POTTSTOWN >> The Borough Authority voted unanimously Tuesday night to spend close to $1 million on new security measures for the water treatment and sewer treatment plants.

The bid for new electronic gates which can be opened with access cards, new communications equipment and new wiring for a new phone system was awarded to the Silas Bolef Co. of Norristown for a price of $920,000.

That price was 5 percent higher than officials had estimated, said Authority Engineer Tom Weld.

The project is part of the Authority’s five-year capital plan, which also includes regular scheduled maintenance on the system’s water tanks.

Weld also informed the authority board Tuesday night that because of the number of cell tower antennae located on the water tank in Sanatoga behind the former K-Mart store, plans to paint the inside and outside of that tank are being postponed.

Instead, the authority will move ahead with plans to paint the inside of the tank on Washington hill in the borough – a project with a $400,000 price tag.

An assessment a few years ago rated the paint on the outside of the tank to be in good shape, but Weld suggested giving it a quick check before starting to see if it needs paint on the outside as well.

If it does, the price will increase significantly, Weld warned.
