The Fleetwood Area School District and the FASD Foundation are very pleased to announce the selection of three individuals as Distinguished Alumni of Fleetwood Area High School. The induction ceremony will be held on Thursday, May 18th during the high school’s Band and Orchestra Spring Concert.

The honorees earned recognition through their outstanding service to the community or for outstanding contributions to their profession.

Gary Ebeling, Class of 1961, will be honored for his outstanding service to the community. He was the Mayor of the Borough of Fleetwood from 2003 to 2012. He served on Fleetwood Borough Council from 1976 until 2001, serving as Vice President for 23 of those years. He received the Fleetwood Fire Company’s Lifetime Achievement Award. Mr. Ebeling served as president of many organizations including the Horace Kieffer American Legion Post # 625, the Sportsmen Association of Fleetwood, the Fleetwood Council Community Organization, the Breakfast Brothers, the Fleetwood Baseball Association, the Fleetwood Area Music Association, and the Berks County Printing Association. He also served as the vice president of the Fleetwood Medical Center Board. He was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church where he served on numerous committees. He also served in the US Army from 1964 to 1972, and was a Staff Sergeant in the Army Reserves. Mr. Ebeling passed away in 2012.

The Honorable Gail Greth, Class of 1972, is being honored for outstanding contributions to her community and profession. Judge Greth has served as District Justice for the Magisterial District Court in Fleetwood for more than 35 years. She worked with the Council on Chemical Abuse to establish a program to teach students about the effects of drugs and alcohol. She established anti-truancy initiatives with local school districts. She established work site locations for defendants who are ordered to complete community service. She also established a night court system to ensure that a district justice is available around-the-clock. Judge Greth is also a member of numerous community organizations including the Rotary Club, Tri-Valley YMCA, and the Northeast Berks Chamber of Commerce.

Sandra L. Stauffer, Ph.D., Class of 1974, is being honored for outstanding contributions to her profession. Dr. Stauffer is a Professor of Music in Music Education at Arizona State University (ASU) and is the Associate Dean for Academic Personnel for the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts. She is the recipient of the Outstanding Graduate Mentor Award given by the Graduate College of the ASU. She also received the O. M. Hartsell Excellence in Teaching Music Award from the Arizona Music Educators Association. She was the first to be recognized as the Evelyn Smith Professor of Music at ASU. She has co-authored five books on music education and contributed to 17 other books. She has written 24 peer-reviewed articles for professional journals on music listening, general music education, and music teacher preparation. She has presented ten research papers for professional audiences. She has also provided 58 public lectures on Music Education around the world.

It is a privilege to recognize these three outstanding individuals for their service to our community or for their outstanding contributions to their profession. Each will be honored with a plaque that will be permanently displayed on the wall opposite the high school auditorium.
