Two bridges over Interstate 78 in Berks County will be replaced.
State Route 4011/Mountain Road Bridge over I-78 at Exit 23 Shartlesville and the State Route 183 Bridge over I-78 at Exit 19 Strausstown are being replaced as part of a $38 million contract awarded to HRI, Inc. of State College, said Ronald J. Young, Jr., of PA Department of Transportation Engineering District 5.
“The bridges are being replaced to provide a minimum under-clearance of 16 feet 6 inches,” said Young.
The contract includes the replacement of six bridges over I-78. In addition to the Shartlesville and Strausstown bridges, the other four bridges are State Route 419, Midway Road, Northkill Road and Power Drive, which have already been replaced under this contract, said Young.
“The State Route 4011/Mountain Road Bridge contractor has begun work on the ramps at Exit 23. Portions of the ramps are restricted to 11-feet wide and will remain this way throughout construction. This bridge has a fair amount of work on the ramps at Exit 23 which will continue until the bridge demolition begins,” said Young. “Starting the week of July 10, the contractor expects to begin demolition operations on the Mountain Road Bridge over I-78. At this point, the bridge will be closed and will be reconstructed.”
Also, the ramp from Mountain Road to I-78 east will be closed during construction. Young said work at this location is anticipated to be complete by the end of August.
Work to replace the State Route 183 Bridge over Interstate 78 at Exit 19 Strausstown is expected to begin shortly after Labor Day and last approximately 40 days, he said.
