The Animal Rescue League of Berks County is celebrating their 65th Anniversary with a wine and cheese reception at the Berks History Center, 940 Centre Ave., on July 7, from 4:30-7:30 p.m.
The celebration will focus on Mary Archer, the founder of the Animal Rescue League of Berks County. Archer, also known as “Militant Mary”, was very active in the Suffragette movement, the Democratic National Committee, and Berks County Prison. Items Archer donated to the Berks History Center will be on display, which include a silver tea set, a portrait of her mother, and a desk from Robesonia Furnace.
ARL Executive Director Liz McCauley stated, “Mary Archer was very passionate about saving and protecting the animals in Berks County. We at the ARL are proud to continue her legacy and feel equally as passionate and responsible for the care of the homeless animals in our community.”
The highlight of the evening will be guest speaker Ruth Schaffer, who will be giving a presentation at 6:00pm on Archer. Schaffer has been volunteering with the Berks History Center for 20 years as a researcher in the Henry Janssen Library. Schaffer was born and raised in East Reading, graduated with a B.A. from Albright College and a M.A. from Ohio University.
