The Hamburg Strand Theater hosts Art and a Movie events this summer for children, “The Wizard of Oz” on July 17 at 10 a.m. and Pixar’s “Wall-E” on Aug. 14 at 10 a.m.

“We were trying to think of fun activities for children to do over the summer break and thought of how we could incorporate a movie,” said Bethany Sholl, theater manager. “My daughter Harper is 6 and loves art so we thought of this! Our local artist, Hil Eldridge, had done an art class for teenagers at the theater recently so we asked her if she’d be interested. She was super excited to be involved and has chosen both the movies and art projects to go along with it. She’s a really fun and enthusiastic teacher with great ideas!”

Sholl said their goal is to offer additional events other than just movies to the community and be a community gathering spot for fun and educational activities and classes.

“We would like to offer fun summer activities and opportunities to make art and use the movie as inspiration to create!” said Sholl.

The Strand hopes to provide something for everyone in the community.

“In recent months we have had events and movies for children, teens, adults, history buffs (Centralia), our Faith Night series, along with our regular weekly movie offerings,” she said.

The Strand will host Rich Potter’s Bert the Nerd Thrill Show at 10 a.m. on July 24 which includes a show, lunch and a juggling clinic for ages 7 and above. Bert has toured with Ringling Bros. & Barnum and Bailey Circus. For more about Bert the Nerd, visit www.BertTheNerd.com. Tickets are $20 or see the show only for $10. Pre-registration is required. Purchase tickets at The Strand, at Our Town Foundation, 335 State St., Hamburg, or through EventBrite online.

“We hope this offers another fun activity for kids in the area!”

The Strand is a part of the Our Town Foundation.

Our Town Foundation Executive Director Deena Kershner, said, “All of the summer theater activities were coordinated by Bethany and her mom, Stephanie, co-manager of the theater to provide activities for children and families during their summer school break. We continually are adding events at the theater to provide more than movies for the public to enjoy. Our Town Foundation is continuously making improvements to the theater; the last being the installation of two mini split heating/cooling units. None of these improvements could have been done without the financial support we received from the community. We also received a grant from the Berks County Community Foundation Rural Arts Fund in support of these summer activities.”
