Schuylkill Valley teacher accused of indecent contact with female student

A Schuylkill Valley High School teacher, Daniel Luke Hornberger, 54, Reading, has been accused of inappropriate communications and indecent contact with one of his female students, age 17. Charges include institutional sexual assault and corruption of minors.

On June 1, 2017, detectives from the Berks County District Attorney’s Office Child Abuse Unit initiated an investigation relative to inappropriate electronic communications between a Schuylkill Valley High School teacher and a 17-year-old female student. The teacher was identified as the defendant, Daniel Luke Hornberger.

During the investigation, detectives learned that the defendant and the female student would meet after school hours at multiple locations throughout Berks County, including three park areas, Lake Ontelaunee, Grings Mill and Angelica Park. The defendant did engage in a course of conduct which included indecent contact with the female student. These encounters occurred on numerous occasions from March to June 2017.

During the time that these meetings occurred, the defendant was employed as a teacher at the Schuylkill Valley High School and the 17-year-old female was a student in one of the defendant’s classes.

On July 12, 2017, detectives obtained an arrest warrant for the defendant. The warrant was issued by Magisterial District Judge Thomas Gauby on the aforementioned charges.

At approximately 10 a.m. July 14, 2017, Daniel Hornberger surrendered to Berks County Detectives at their office. The defendant was accompanied by his attorney.

At the time of this press release, the defendant was awaiting arraignment at the Berks County Sheriff’s Processing Center.
