Three Hamburg scouts awarded Supernova Award for learning STEM topics

Three scouts of Cub Scouts in Pack 120, Hamburg, were awarded the Dr. Luis W. Alvarez Supernova Award on June 14. Twins Xander Rodriguez and Logan Rodriguez, Bear Rank age 9, and Ogden Rahn, Wolf Rank age 8, earned this with hard work and dedication to learning about Science, Technology, Engineering and Math topics.

Their hard work to earn these real bronze medals included multiple elective for their rank, talks with professionals in STEM careers, participation in their school science fair, Earning PI pieces as part of the NOVA awards and other events.

All three boys have been involved in scouting since they were 5, and in Kindergarten as a Lion. In first grade, they were Tigers, in Second, Wolf, Third graders are Bear rank. All three boys moved up rank the date the award was handed out. Xander and Logan are now Webelo scouts and Ogden is now a Bear scout.

The Boy Scouts of America offer the NOVA awards for scouts that want to go above their rank levels and earn special NOVA awards called PI pieces. In addition, Xander and Logan Rodriguez both earned Nova Down and Dirty, Nova Out of This World, Nova Science Everywhere, and Nova Swing! Ogden Rahn earned Nova Science Everywhere! Xander and Logan both participated in the Hawk Mountain Council STEM University in 2017 and Xander also in 2016.

Darla Rodriguez, Committee Chair for Cub Pack 120, has served as their STEM Counselor. She announced that four boys are currently working hard on the Pi Pieces of the NOVA awards in hopes to also earn Super Nova Awards.

There are two Super Nova Awards available to Cub Scouts. The Dr. Luis W. Alvarez Supernova Award is for Wolf and Bear ranks, and the Dr. Charles H. Townes Supernova Award is for Webelo rank scouts.

Cub pack 120 is always welcoming new scouts for any grade level K-5. Meetings are on Monday nights at First United Church Of Christ on the corner of 3rd and Pine in Hamburg.
