Schuylkill Valley School District’s new Superintendent Dr. Cindy Mierzejewski is eager to welcome students on the first day of school on Aug. 28.

“I can’t wait for the kids to be back into the buildings again. I can’t wait. I’m counting the days,” said Mierzejewski, who replaced retired superintendent Dr. Warren Mata. Her first day was July 1.

Mierzejewski offered advice to students and families preparing to go back to school.

“The principals and the assistant principals have really tried to get as much communication out to the families so make sure that you look at all of the communications, take advantage of all of the back to school nights, the opening days.”

Meet the Teachers Nights will be held at the High School on Aug. 30 at 6:30 p.m. and at the Middle School Grade 5 Only on Aug. 23 at 7 p.m.; Grades 6 – 8 on Aug. 31 at 7 p.m.

At the Elementary School, the Kindergarten Bus Ride and Meet The Teacher Night is on Aug. 21 at 6 p.m. Grades 1 – 4 Meet the Teacher Night is Aug. 23 from 6 – 7 p.m.

Middle School Locker Orientation for 5th Graders is from 11 a.m. to noon. For students with last names from Acker to Harrell orientation is on Aug. 15. Students with last names from Harris to Oswald orientation is Aug. 16. Students with last names from Peters to Zaharia, orientation is Aug. 17.

Mierzejewski encourages anyone with questions to contact the school offices.

“Those new to the district I think will find it’s a really open and receptive community and that they should participate in the activities the school is offering because there is a lot of good stuff happening there.”

Her goals for this school year are to review and reflect.

“My goals are to find out as much as I can about the district but keep the district moving forward. It’s a great district; they’ve been doing a lot of great things so we want to make sure we continue doing that and don’t stall and don’t stop… The goal is to make sure things are moving forward.”

New this school year will be a new stadium. The stadium project is in progress and anticipated to be completed by the end of September.

Mierzejewski believes Schuylkill Valley’s first two home games are scheduled to be played at Hamburg but the rest of the season is anticipated to be played at Schuylkill Valley’s new stadium.

“Looking forward to it. It’s really exciting,” said Mierzejewski. “We had a cinder track. I was told we were one of the few cinder tracks left in the county. We will have a state-of-the-art track with additional lanes.”

The new stadium will have a turf field, new visitors stands, new press box and new ticket office. The stadium will be fenced in also for added security.

“Our sports teams are really excited about it,” said Mierzejewski. “It’s also going to be open to the community so the community will be able to use the track and be able to take advantage of that. We’re still working out the logistics of that but we’re really looking forward to being able to share it with the whole community.”
