Noted food historian Alan Keyser has been listed as the speaker for the New Hanover Township Historical Society’s September program. His topic, “Pennsylvania Dutch Cooking Through the Year,” is an illustrated talk supported by a lifetime of research and writing on Pennsylvania German themes.
In the old days, since all food was produced locally, available diet changed with the seasons. Foods, food preparation, and storage were entirely seasonal and considerable skill was required to raise and prepare foods for the daily table while also preserving fruit, vegetables and meats for the long winter.
Keyser is known to be the most authoritative local researcher and author on Pennsylvania Dutch folk-culture.
The program is scheduled for Wednesday, September 13 at 7:00 p.m. at the School House, Reifsnyder Road, by the Swamp Creek Park. Visitors welcome.
The New Hanover Township Historical Society is dedicated to preserving the history, heritage and lore of New Hanover Township and the surrounding area. Members meet in their restored Swamp Creek School House. The group has also restored the nearby 1850’s era Dengler Summer Kitchen where they do hearth cooking on most Fridays.
