Fair organizers have added two new contests this year – both of which are aiming to engage young people.
The Daily Facebook Photo Contest and the Youth Decorating Cupcake Contest are the newest competitions to come to the Oley Fair.
For the photo contest there will be a different photo theme each day. Thursday’s theme is “Oley Fair Animals,” Friday’s theme is “Oley Fair Food,” and Saturday’s theme is “Oley Fair Contests.” Photos must be taken at the fair on the day of entry.
“We’re just trying to get some more people involved, some younger people involved, and just knowing Facebook was a good way to that this year,” Dena Kauffman, fair treasurer and committee member. “I think it’s going to go pretty well.”
Kauffman said over the last thirty days, they started an Oley Fair countdown on the Facebook page. There’s a picture from the fair posted each day with countdown number on it. She said that actually has peaked interest and generated a lot of excitement.
“I think a lot of people seem to use the Facebook page, they’ll see the contest and think, ‘oh, a way for me to participate to post my Oley Fair picture.'”
To enter – there is a limit of one entry per person per day. Photos for that day’s contest can only be uploaded after 9 a.m. on that day. Photos from previous fair years may not be submitted into the contest. Photos should be uploaded to the Oley Valley Community Fair Facebook Page. The photos will become property of the Oley Fair. Also, the fair has the right to remove any inappropriate photos.
Photos with the most number of “likes” will win for the day. Prizes will be awarded daily for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place based on the number of “likes.” The cutoff time for accumulating “likes” will be 10 p.m. each day. Winners will be announced on the Oley Fair Facebook page on the following morning.
Participants in the cupcake contest must be ages 8-18 and be an Oley Fair area resident. One entry per person and each entry must include six decorated cupcakes inspired by an insect theme. Bees, butterflies, and caterpillars are listed as examples in the fair guide.
The cake mix and the icing for all entries must be made from scratch – no mixes can be used. The recipe must be submitted with the entry. The top prize for this contest is $250.
