READING >> The Berks County Bar Association will be holding a lecture next month that will touch on challenges facing the press.
Attorney Selina MacLaren will present the Berks County Bar Association Lecture in Contemporary Legal Issues on Monday, Oct. 2, at 7:30 p.m., in Albright College’s Wachovia Theatre.
The lecture, “Leaks, Lies, and Litigation: The Press’ Challenges in Holding Government Accountable,” is presented through a partnership between Albright and the bar association. The event is free and open to the public.
MacLaren is the Stanton Foundation Free Press/National Security Legal Fellow at the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press, a Washington-based nonprofit that provides pro bono legal support and other resources to protect First Amendment freedoms and the newsgathering rights of journalists. MacLaren’s lecture will discuss leaks to the news media and the civil liberties implications of electronic surveillance of the press, national security dimensions, and more.
MacLaren previously served as a litigation associate at the firm Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan, LLP. She graduated from The University of Chicago Law School and served as an editor of the Chicago Journal of International Law.
The Berks County Bar Association Lecture in Contemporary Legal Issues, established in 2014 and held annually at Albright College, features prominent law scholars, legal practitioners or jurists discussing topics of interest to Albright students and the community at large. The lecture series is made possible by financial support from the bar association, a nonprofit organization of nearly 650 Berks attorneys that offers its members numerous opportunities for professional development and helps deliver the services of member attorneys to the community.
