DOUGLASS (Berks) >> Police are warning residents about scam phone calls after officers had a run-in of their own with the callers.
According to a Facebook post by Douglass (Berks) Police, a resident reported to police that they had been receiving phone calls they believed to be a scam. The resident told police that the phone calls had come from the number 877-350-3359 and that the callers had said their names were Linn and Kathleen Gaines with Attorney at Law Walker and Goldstein from New York.
During the call, the alleged associates said that the resident owed $2,700 on a payday loan they had taken out in 2014. The resident, however, never took out payday loan, police said. The associate then stated it was the resident’s son who defrauded him and used his information.
The caller threatened the resident and told them that if they paid $500 today it would all go away and they wouldn’t be forced to put a lien on their home, according to police.
After hanging up with the caller, the resident called police.
An officer from Douglass (Berks) Police called the reported number and provided the alleged associate with the case number. Police said the associate became “angry and belligerent” and threatened that the resident would be served papers on Tuesday.
Police are asking that residents who receive similar phone calls hang up and report the call to police. They are urging residents not to give out any information or payment.
