AMITY >> Police are investigating after a man reportedly received several calls that police said appear to be scam attempts.

Amity Police said they received a report on Friday, Sept. 8, at 7:05 p.m. from a man who said he received several suspicious phone calls from two separate individuals and phone numbers. The man told police that both callers had foreign accents and that they claimed to be with the United States Federal Grants Office.

Police said the first caller was named Elena and called from a New York area code while the second caller was named Austin Peters and called from a Washington, D.C., area code. The individuals told the man that because he had just refinanced his home, he was eligible for a $9,000 grant refund. They also told him that in order to receive the money, he had to go to Walmart, purchase a $100 iTunes gift card and give them the numbers from the back of the card, police said.

The man then went to Walmart and purchased the gift card and received more phone calls from the individuals asking for the status. Once he told the caller he had purchased the gift cards, the caller then told him to return to Walmart and purchase an additional $350.00 in ITunes gift cards to complete the transaction, according to authorities.

It was then that the man notified police.

Amity Police are continuing to investigate the incident.
