Eleven years ago, JoAnne McKiernan of Pottstown had a dream to create a fundraising event where dogs and those who loved them could come together to raise money for the American Cancer Society. Today Bark For Life is a worldwide event, with its own offshoot in the Oley Valley.

In 2013, Robert Olock, a longtime participant at the Relay For Life of Boyertown, decided to start his own Bark and selected the Oley Fairgrounds as its location. “When asked what my dog has to do with the American Cancer Society,” he says, “I always tell them that 90% of the research done by the American Cancer Society is transferrable to your canine.”

This year’s Grand Marshall, Mona Gincley, is involved in memory of her boxer Charlie. “If love could have saved you, you would have lived forever. Anyone that has ever lost a dog knows the heartache. When Charlie was only 2 years old he was diagnosed with cancer. We went for four opinions for treatment. Unfortunately, even with surgery, cyber knife treatments, and low dose chemotherapy, Charlie lost his battle a week after his 3rd birthday. Come join us on October 1st at the Bark For Life to hear the story of how one dog changed our lives.”

In addition to contracting cancer themselves, dogs are often caregivers for those going through treatment. Former Grand Marshall Sherry Sperring adopted her greyhound Playgirl as a therapy dog after her diagnosis. Countless others rely on their beloved pets for love and comfort during the challenges of a cancer journey.

No matter how you or your pet has been touched by cancer, all are welcome at a fun day of dogs, vendors, food, and live acoustic performances. The fifth annual Bark For Life of Boyertown/Oley Valley will take place at the Oley Fairgrounds on Sunday, Oct. 1. Registration opens at 10 a.m. There is a $10 per dog registration fee, which benefits the American Cancer Society. Registered dogs receive a bandannas and gift bag. There is no cost for human guests, but donations are greatly appreciated.

Opening Ceremonies begin at 11:15 a.m., with live music starting at noon and running until 4 p.m. Alyssa Dodge, 14 year old singer/songwriter, will be performing at 1:30. At 12:30 p.m. there will be a Pet Costume Contest sponsored by PetValu, with prizes awarded to the top three best dressed canines.

After taking a few laps around the Fairgrounds, attendees are encouraged to visit our vendors, which include many pet related items. Delicious food will be available for purchase, in addition to exciting raffles. Local rescues will be in attendance for those looking to adopt. A kid’s table will be manned by the Boyertown High School Honors Society.

The event will also be collecting items to donate to the rescues, such as cleaning products, pet food, or dog toys, and pairs of pajamas for the PJ Project.

For those without a dog who are still looking to help, there will be a car cruise taking place during the event. There is no charge to park a car. The first 40 participants will receive a Relay For Life keychain.

A quoit tournament will also be held. Registration begins at 8am and the cost is $25 per team. Prizes will be awarded to the top three teams.

In the past four years, this event has raised over $21,000. Olock would love to see over 100 dogs in attendance this year. “My goal is to make our American Cancer Society staff partner, Amy Miller, get a new job because cancer is no longer a threat.”

“I’m fine with that,” Miller says with a laugh. “I am so blessed to work with these amazing communities who fund so much research and support. But once we finally beat this disease, I’ll gladly throw a party and turn my efforts elsewhere.”

Those interested can follow Boyertown Oley Bark For Life on Facebook. Vendors, sponsors, and volunteers are still being accepted. Contact Bob Olock at 610.781.4313 for more info, or visit relayforlife.org/barkboyertownoleypa to donate or pre-register.
