EXETER >> Exeter Police have some big paw prints to fill after one of their seasoned K-9 officers is stepping down from duty.

Exeter Police said K-9 Mako worked his last shift as an Exeter officer Monday after working with his handler, Darrin Gartner since 2008.

“It was a bit of a sad day today here at the Exeter Township Police Department. Today, K-9 Mako worked his last shift as an Exeter Township Police K-9. After serving the Exeter community for 9 years, Mako is retiring for medical reasons and he is set to live out his days at home with his handler,” Exeter Police announced on their Facebook page.

According to police, Mako was first certified as a narcotics and patrol dog in May 2008. That same year, he assisted with the seizure of a quarter pound of paraphernalia and illegal drugs in a single incident. In the following nine years, he assisted with searches and seizures that resulted in nearly $850,000 worth of drugs, cash and vehicles.

He has also assisted in multiple school searches each year.

As a patrol dog, Mako also located or assisted with track searches for various armed felons and wanted persons.

Mako is retiring from the police department after being diagnosed with an inoperable mass.

A retirement ceremony was held for Mako Monday evening at the Exeter Township’s Board of Supervisors Meeting.

“Mako will be missed greatly and his contributions will not be forgotten. Take care Mako, you’re a great dog. And thank you for your service,” the department said.
