The Union Township Board of Supervisors unanimously approved a motion on Oct. 16 to advertise its proposed 2018 budget of $1,723,703 with no tax increase.

Taxes will remain at 3.65 mills.

Properties with an assessed value of $100,000 would continue to pay an annual tax bill of $365.

The general fund balance will remain at $445,000.

The budget includes the purchase of a $202,415, 10-wheeler truck for the road department, a four percent salary increase for township administration and road crew personnel, and $25,000 for land acquisition costs related to the installation next year of the Geigertown sewer line.

Township Manager Jason Wager said the township’s sewer fund will have a $180,000 surplus due to that reimbursement amount from the Geigertown Area Joint Sewer Authority.

The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection is requiring construction of the sewer line for 115 Geigertown properties in Union and Robeson townships.

It is required due to groundwater contamination from homes and businesses with failing on-lot sewer systems.

The new sewer line will connect the new hookups to the Birdsboro Wastewater Treatment Plant.

Wager said the Kulptown Fire Company Social Quarters, Kulptown, has recently given an $8,000 contribution check to the Birdsboro-Union Fire Company, 214 W. 1st St., Birdsboro.

“They do understand now what their function is, and they expect to make another contribution at the end of the year,” said Wager, adding that Kulptown will soon provide the township with its 2015-16 financial information.”By next month we will know their 2015-16 revenue.”

Wager has notified the state Liquor Control Board of Kulptown’s recent and future contribution plan.

Supervisors’ Chairman Donald Basile said Sept. 18 that the Kulptown social quarters was violating an agreement with the township to contribute money from its liquor sales for the operation of the Birdsboro-Union Fire Company.

The board had approved to notify the LCB of the liquor license violation.

Kulptown’s social quarters remained open five years ago when the fire and rescue operations were terminated following the establishment of the Birdsboro-Union Fire Company in 2009.

Basile said the township had received $3,000 from Kulptown since 2010, compared to the $10,000 to $15,000 of contributions from the Birdsboro-Union Fire Company social quarters.
