The Boyertown Area School District has announced that Boyertown Middle School East donated 620 nonperishable food items to the Boyertown Area Multi-Service.

The food items were collected through a pumpkin-carving contest organized by the school’s Morale Committee. Faculty and staff were encouraged to enter a carved or decorated pumpkin, which were displayed in the cafeteria. The students voted for their favorite pumpkin by donating a canned or nonperishable item over the course of three days; the pumpkin that garnered the most donations won.

This year, the committee had help from the school’s Leo Club, a student organization that promotes and gives opportunities for leadership, teamwork, and community service. Eighth grade students and Leo Club members Alexandria Fargnoli, Sophia Taylor, and Joseph Carter assisted in collecting and inventorying the donated goods.

“It feels good to give back to the community with the Leo Club,” says Fargnoli. “They needed help, so we stepped up.”

Ms. Karen Monzo, one of the teachers who organized the event, says, “It’s really special how all of East faculty and staff-teachers, aides, janitors, and secretaries- can come together for this.”
