A local Berks Career and Technology Center teacher, Tamzen Davis, is training a golden retriever, Lucy, to be a therapy dog. Lucy is currently 11 months old. Her owner has Lucy, since she was 8 weeks old.

What is involved in training Lucy? To train her she must have a handler take her to classes at BCTC; she also has to be taken to Berks Heim Nursing Home twice. Lucy must learn to be quiet and to have a calming effect on people. So far, she is handling this task very well.

Lucy being in the class rooms helps her to learn how to behave around large groups of people. She is going to stay with her owner for her whole life.

What is Lucy’s character like? Davis describes Lucy as very loyal and loving dog. Lucy has an old soul and loves visiting Cabela’s in Hamburg with her owner.

Lucy can be found either in classrooms or in the offices at BCTC. She’s quite popular, especially among the principles! Her favorite place to go is the cafeteria because she finds joy out of finding tater tots on the floor.

“She is very drawn to handicapped people in wheel chairs,” reported Davis.

Davis’ favorite time with Lucy is when they are in the car and Lucy leans over and kisses her cheek. Davis is very proud of Lucy and her development as well as her character.

Lucy is quite the sweetheart, and her mission is to bring sunshine to people’s lives. If you get the chance stop by and see Lucy. She loves attention and cuddles.
