First Reformed Church of the United Church of Christ (First Church) at 76 S. Third St. in Hamburg held its First Annual Chili Cook-off on Jan. 21.

The air in the church that morning had a spicy aroma that tempted everyone to join in the tasting immediately after the worship service.

There were 11 contestants whose crockpots were filled with their own chili creations – all ready for the challenge. Not one of those 11 entries tasted the same. Who knew there were so many flavors to chili?

Contestants competed for best in one of two categories – Hot and Spicy, and Mild. Trophies and bragging rights were awarded to the winners in each category. Toby Wolber won best in the Hot and Spicy category with the best in the Mild category going to the young team of Jordyn Crespo and Rebecca Young.

Although not a category, the camaraderie was the best overall part of the event.
