Kutztown man stole sign; police chase ended at closed road for down wires

A Kutztown man stolen a speed limit sign in Richmond Township and then led Fleetwood Police on a chase that ended at a closed road due to down wires.

Fleetwood Police Officer Thomas Focht reported that while responding to a call for wires down on the roadway on Crystal Ridge Road in Richmond Township at 2:52 p.m. on March 3, Focht observed a blue Hyundai pulled off the roadway about 100 feet west of Crystal Cave Road. The driver, John Yost, 45, Kutztown, was in the process of putting a 40 mile per hour speed limit sign and post into his vehicle.

Focht reported that when Yost saw the police, Yost quickly got in his vehicle and drove off at a high rate of speed, as Focht was behind him with emergency lights and siren activated.

Leading police on a chase, Yost continued to drive west on Crystal Ridge Road at a high rate of speed and several times crossed into the oncoming lane. Yost then had to stop and pull over at the intersection of Adam Road, the road was closed due to wires down.

Police report that no other vehicles were in the area during this incident.

Charges will be filed for theft, receiving stolen property, fleeing and eluding, and other summary offense.

The sign is owned by Richmond Township.
