The Auxiliary of the Shoemakersville Fire Co. is holding a night of live entertainment by Flamin’ Dick and the Hot Rods on April 21 to raise funds for the fire company.

The band will perform Oldies at Shoemakersville Fire Co. Banquet Hall, 300 Church Ave., Shoemakersville, on April 21. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Kitchen opens at 6:30 p.m. There will be a cash bar. Music is from 8 to 11 p.m.

“The Auxiliary of the Shoemakersville Fire Company #1 was formed over 50 years ago to raise funds to purchase gear and equipment for our volunteer firefighters,” said Susan Lutz, Treasurer for the Auxiliary and head of this fundraiser. “We are having Flamin’ Dick and the Hot Rods on April 21 and again in November. We try to do at least two fundraisers a year for the firefighters and with a gift card from Thrivent we are able to buy food for the event.”

Lutz said some of the firefighters help the Auxiliary with their events.

“We work together as a great team and have one common goal which makes this quite unique. Our goal is to provide the firefighters with whatever tools they require to continue giving great service to our community, whether at an automobile accident, medical assist or fighting a fire. Our fire company is not a paid company so relies solely on volunteers,” said Lutz. “If our guys are not at work with their respective jobs they are always ready and willing to help anyone in the community. They sacrifice their own time and their safety to ensure the well-being for those in our community. As a firefighters wife, many times your meals are interrupted, sleep definitely interrupted and plans for the day go by the wayside when that call goes out for help. Knowing you are helping someone in need makes it all worthwhile.”

If it’s a major fire and the firefighters will be out for hours, the Auxiliary will go prepare and deliver food to them.

“Firefighting is definitely a family affair,” said Lutz. “Shoemakersville and Perry Township residents know that when a call comes in for assistance or an emergency, Shoemakersville Fire Company will be there to aid them. Our crew stands ready for anything. Many years ago when our granddaughter was 2 years old and her pop pop had to leave for a call, she turned to me and said “someone needs help”. I was surprised she knew that but every time she saw a blue light flashing, her mom told her someone needs help.”

Training occurs on Tuesday evenings and the firefighters welcome new firefighters to train with them. Firefighters have the same motto as Boy Scouts “Be Prepared” and we are at Shoemakersville Fire Company, said Lutz.

Shoemakersville Firefighter David Rubright has been a firefighter for 20 years, he joined when he was 17 years old.

“We have a great bunch of men and women at the Fire Company that volunteer their time and put their lives on the line on every emergency call, because every emergency call is not the same. When our crew helps a person in need, we feel good about what we do. The volunteer firefighters of the Shoemakersville Fire Company are proud to serve Shoemakersville Borough and Perry Township,” said Rubright.
