Slick roads cause crashes in Hamburg Friday: truck strikes bridge; vehicle strikes school bus

Slick road conditions due to snow and ice lead to poor driving conditions early in the morning in Hamburg on March 9. Hamburg Borough Police responded after a pickup truck slid on ice and struck a bridge overpass and responded to another accident scene after a car slid head on into a school bus.

Hamburg Borough Police Chief Anthony Kuklinski reported that on Friday morning, March 9, Hamburg Police responded to a one vehicle crash on Route 61 northbound in the area of the Schuylkill River Overpass bridge.

“The driver of a late model pickup truck slid out of control and crashed into the bridge,” reported Kuklinski. “The primary cause of the crash was weather related, in that there was a light snowfall that froze on the bridge. PennDOT was notified to address the hazardous road conditions.”

There were no reported injuries. The vehicle was towed from the scene.

While officers were on the scene of the pickup truck accident, another crash was reported on Pine Street, Hamburg, of an automobile and school bus.

“The vehicle slid on the icy road surface and crashed head on into the bus,” he said.

Hamburg Police, Union Fire Company of Hamburg and Hamburg Ambulance, as well as officials from School District Transportation and Hamburg Area School District administrators responded to the scene. There were no injuries.

The automobile was towed from the scene and the was driven from the scene.

Both investigations are continuing.
