League of Women Voters hosts Hot Topics Luncheon ‘Criminal Justice Reform in Pennsylvania’

The League of Women Voters of Berks County is hosting a Hot Topics Luncheon on Saturday, April 21, 2018 from 12:00 noon – 2:30 p.m. at the Inn at Reading, 1040 Park Road, Wyomissing.

The topic is “Criminal Justice Reform in Pennsylvania” and the speaker is Dr. John E. Wetzel, Secretary of the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections.

Dr. Wetzel has 28 years experience and has served as a correctional officer, counselor, treatment supervisor, and Director of the Training Academy and then the Warden at the Franklin County Jail where he was credited with leading an effort that resulted in a transformation of their correctional system. At the forefront was maximizing it’s correctional continuum to reduce reliance on incarceration while improving outcomes for offenders.

He is a national consultant and speaker whose areas of expertise include staffing, vulnerability assessment, mentally ill offenders, developing employment opportunities for formerly incarcerated offenders, population management, mitigating impacts on families/children of incarcerated individuals and effecting system change.

He is a member of Harvard’s Executive Session on Community Corrections which is part of Harvard’s John F. Kennedy School of Government and the National Institute of Justice.

He received an Honorary Doctorate from the Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
