National Library Week April 8 to 14 is a celebration to highlight changes within the library, promote new programs and projects, and advocate reading. The 2018 Celebration marks the 60th anniversary promoting the theme “Libraries Lead”.

The celebration was established in 1958 to encourage more people to read. At the time research showed that people were spending more money on radios, televisions, and musical instruments rather than on books. As a result of these findings, a committee was formed to design ways to encourage people to visit the library and read more.

The committee wants to show that the library is an exciting place that appeals to everyone. By celebrating all the library offers, it encourages more people to utilize it’s resources and donate to their local library.

This year Misty Copeland, a New York Times Best-Selling Author with her newest book “Ballerina Body” released in March 2017, serves as National Library Week Honorary Chair. Copeland is the first African American woman to be promoted to the principal dancer at the American Ballet Theatre. Copeland says, “Discover your passions and achieve your goals at the library.”

This week offers an opportunity to discover many different programs and resources the Kutztown Community Library has to offer along with books.

Young children and caregivers join the adventure of Story Time with Miss Taylor, Tunes and Tots with Miss Lacie, and play at Wiggly Wednesday.

Elementary age students build with LEGO Crew and create with Art Cats. Middle and high school students make friends at Teen Tuesday and join the latest book discussion at the Teen Reading Lounge. Everyone is welcome to enjoy all things Pokemon at the matches held on Monday nights.

Adults can find a new read with the Cover-to-Cover Book Discussion Group, stitch with Community Threads, and get innovative at Craft Night.

Through all the different programs and activities, one should remember why libraries exist. People of all ages can borrow best-selling books, audio books, and DVDS to bring home and enjoy with the whole family. They can connect with the world through the Internet. The library is here to allow access to reading to anyone and everyone.

Nationally, celebrations will be held for Library Workers Day, Bookmobile Day, and Take Action for Libraries Day. April 10 is Library Workers Day, so stop by Library and thank your favorite librarian.

The Kutztown Community Library is looking to celebrate with the community all it has contributed and offers. From encouraging literacy to helping young children learn, the library wants to show off its best during the week of April 8.
