The Boyertown Area School District is pleased to announce that Mrs. Darla Lieb, elementary physical education teacher, has received the Elementary Physical Education Teacher of the Year Award from the Lancaster-Lebanon-Berks Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance.
The Lancaster-Lebanon-Berks Association is a professional organization committed to supporting physical educators and encourage healthy lifestyles for all in the region.
The award is one of the highest honors given to physical education teachers in the area, in recognition of their outstanding contributions to the profession and their students.
Lieb has been a member of the Boyertown Area School District faculty since 2010. She currently teaches physical education and second grade health at both Gilbertsville and Colebrookdale Elementary Schools and serves as the lead teacher for the elementary physical education department.
Lieb has worked to restructure the elementary physical education curriculum to meet national and state standards. It introduces students to activities that will provide enjoyment, challenges, and self-expression all their lives. The curriculum’s grading rubrics address personal and social behaviors and emphasize self-confidence, good sportsmanship, and respect for others.
According to Lieb, the most rewarding part of teaching is creating fun new experiences for her students. She has developed programs like the Kangaroo Club, a jump-rope challenge that her first and second grade students look forward to each year. She was instrumental in installing a traverse climbing wall in the gymnasium and has been teaching students and faculty the basics of climbing. She also organizes the annual school-wide cooperative field day, where students from kindergarten through sixth grade collaborate in team-building activities and build new friendships.
Lieb will be honored with her award on May 16, at Lancaster-Lebanon-Berks Association’s annual awards banquet in Lancaster.
