EXETER >> Exeter Police are investigating a possible police impersonator after a real Exeter Township officer noticed an unusual traffic stop taking place on Friday.

At 9:44 a.m. on Friday, April 13, the Exeter Police Traffic Safety Unit was conducting traffic checks in the area of the Route 422 bypass at the Mt. Penn exit ramp. One of the officers observed what he believed to be an unmarked police car attempting to initiate a traffic stop on a young woman near the exit ramp.

The officer approached the vehicle as if to provide backup for the unmarked vehicle. As the Exeter police vehicle approached the unmarked car, that vehicle ended the traffic stop and took off on East Neversink Road, police said.

Exeter Police then initiated their own traffic stop on the unmarked vehicle.

After a brief investigation, it was determined that the driver of the unmarked vehicle was not a police officer and he had been using emergency equipment unlawfully installed in the vehicle, according to authorities.

Police described the unmarked suspicious vehicle as a 2003 blue Ford Crown Victoria with black police-style wheels and a police style spot light and red-blue flashing lights. The operator is described as a 35-year-old white male with a goatee.

Police did not release the man’s name or say whether he is facing charges, but the incident is under investigation.

Police are asking that any area motorists who may have come in contact with the driver during a traffic stop call the Exeter Township Police Department at 610-779-1490 and report the incident.
