A hymn sing with five different Lancaster County religious groups, illustrating and commenting on the distinct musical styles of the Mennonites, Church of the Brethren, Old Order Amish, Old Order Mennonites, and Brethren in Christ. Audience participation encouraged. Free and open to the public.
Wednesday, May 16, 7pmThe Development of Carriage Making among the Amish and Mennonites with Isaac Reiff and Jacob King
A Lancaster County Amish and a Union County Mennonite Carriage Maker will trace the rise and fall of carriage making from the 1930s to the present, including the use of hydraulic brakes, fiberglass, lighting and other changes. Free and open to the public.
Wednesday, May 23, 7pmPlain People’s Experience with Genetic Disorders and Emerging Research and Treatments
A panel of medical professionals and families connected to the Clinic for Special Children, Strasburg, will share information on genetic disorders and emerging research and treatments. Free and open to the public.
Congressional Art Show May 1-31
Garden Spot Village, 433 S. Kinzer Avenue, New Holland, Pa., will host the Congressional Art Competition in the Main Street Art Gallery from May 1-31. The community is invited to enjoy this display Monday through Sunday, 9am to 4pm.
This month-long display will feature original pieces of artwork, submitted by high school students from the 16th Congressional District of Pennsylvania and is sponsored by Congressman Lloyd Smucker.
One piece of art will be chosen from the art displayed. This honored student’s work will be hung in the tunnel between the United States Capitol and the Cannon House Office Building. Artwork will be hung for the entire year. Thousands of people, each week, visit the Capitol and view the artwork in the highly guarded tunnel.
Garden Spot Village to Host Musical Memories
Garden Spot Village, 433 S Kinzer Avenue, New Holland, will host Musical Memories on Saturday, May 5 from 1:30-2:30 p.m. in the Chapel. Musical Memories is a unique musical program for individuals with Alzheimer’s or Dementia and their caregiver.
This event, hosted in the Garden Spot Village Chapel, provides an opportunity for individuals experiencing the symptoms of Dementia to spend an afternoon with family members or a caregiver. Music can be a soothing, calming presence in our lives. And depending upon the stage of your journey, music can be the perfect fit for both you and your loved one. This program is a “together” program where you can share a special moment of musical entertainment – together – caregiver and loved one.
