A 3-alarm fire caused extensive damage at Fairmount Foundry, an iron-casting facility at Front and Pine streets in Hamburg Borough.

A State Police fire marshal ruled the accidental, which originated in the electrical room.

Hamburg Borough Police report that on May 3 at about 8:09 p.m. Hamburg and Tilden Police were dispatched to reports of smoke in the area of the Fairmount Foundry.

“Police quickly assessed that there was an active fire and requested fire be expedited,” reported Hamburg Police on Facebook. “Hamburg Police would like to recognize all the fire personnel that responded to help in our time of need.”

No one was injured as a result of the fire.

Fairmount Foundry was founded in 1907 and continues to serve as an iron-casting facility. Temporary repairs at the foundry have allowed work to resume.

“We are hoping for a quick recovery to the foundry’s business,” said Hamburg Mayor George Holmes. “Our industrial base in Hamburg has shrunk over the years and we want to maintain what we still have. As such, the recovery of the foundry is important. We are concerned about the stability of the jobs this business provides, as well as the knock-on effects to the local economy.”
