The Hamburg Police Department remembers and recognizes that 90 years ago, Chief Wilson Lewars and an assisting officer confronted armed individuals that were in the commission of a forcible felony.

Chief Lewars was shot in the chest, neck and head. He succumbed to his injuries later that day.

The assailants were located and arrested in Philadelphia.

Hamburg Police Department lost another officer in 2000.

Officer John Ayello died in the line of duty Sept. 8, 2000, while attempting to arrest an individual who was resisting arrest.

The Hamburg Police Department has the second highest number of line of duty deaths in Berks County, second to the City of Reading.

Let us never forget the ultimate sacrifice these officers made in the course of their duties protecting and serving the Hamburg Community.
