Diakon Community Services is conducting a free “Healthier Living with Diabetes” program, a six-week workshop designed by Stanford University to help improve health for people ages 50 or older who have Type 2 diabetes or pre-diabetes.

The 2.5-hour-per-week workshops will be held in the team conference room at The Lutheran Home at Topton, 1 South Home Ave., from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. June 21 and 28 and July 5, 12, 19, and 26. Family members and caregivers are also invited to participate.

The course will be facilitated by two certified trainers. The workshops are offered at no charge and include the textbook “Living a Healthy Life with Chronic Conditions,” and other materials.

The program is funded by a grant from the Highmark Foundation, with a focus on creating chronic disease self-management education within senior living communities. The grant covers provision of workshops at Diakon senior living communities in Berks, Cumberland, Dauphin, Lehigh, Mifflin and Union counties.
