Berks County Parks and Recreation Department upcoming events include a history day camp for kids and a paddle around Blue Marsh Lake.

The History Day Camp will be held July 17 to 19, from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Berks County Heritage Center.

Students aged 6-12 will spend their three camp days exploring the Heritage Center and its surrounding area. Day 1 is Exploring Cultures of the Past! Join us as we learn about archeology digs and understanding the importance about people of the past and Native American cultures, games and cooking. Explore the Deppen Cemetery and discover the people buried there, and how you can create your own family tree. Day 2 is Canal Life, Games, and Art of the Past! Explore some of the games that were played in the past, and get a chance to make your own jump rope. Then try your hand at an art project that was used to decorate chests. The camp will come to end on Day 3 with Life on the Farm. Get a chance to learn about plowing and create bees wax candles. Then, join us as we explore the Gruber Wagon Works to learn the science and technology behind how wagons were built. Class size is limited to 20 campers aged 6-12. There is a charge per child. Blue Marsh Lake Paddle & Pig Out will be held Friday, July 27, 4 to 6 p.m. at Blue Marsh Lake Peacock Rd. Access Area.

Join us for a paddle around a peaceful bay area of the lake; we will start and end at the Peacock Road Access. After the trip, you are welcome to Blue Marsh Outdoors for BBQ, a campfire and socializing. Water safety, history, and features of the lake will be covered before boats are in the water. Participants can bring their own kayak or reserve one through Blue Marsh Outdoors, 610-488-5540, www.bluemarshoutdoors.com. The trip is for people with paddling experience, and is limited to 20 people. Program presented by a partnership with Blue Marsh Outdoors, U.S.A.C.E. Blue Marsh Lake, Township of Spring Parks & Recreation, and Berks County Parks and Recreation Department. Pre-registration is required to 610-374-2944 by July 16th.
