On Saturday, May 5h, the Manor Golf Club in Sinking Spring played host to the Colonel Jacob P. Morgan American Legion Post 537’s first Annual Golf Outing in support of their Building Fund Campaign.

With the day upon them and not knowing what to expect, the Building Fund Committee headed to the golf course with their band of volunteers. As the foursomes lined up for their 1 p.m. shotgun start, they were blessed with “absolutely beautiful weather. No one could complain about the perfect weather that day,” declared Starla Ewing, a member of the Ladies’ Auxiliary who was in charge of watching the “Pot of Gold” hole that afternoon.

As a thank you for participating, all the golfers were given swag bags that had a variety of gifts in them. Throughout the course the golfers could also participate in prize holes such as “Closest to the Pin,” “Hole in One,” “Pot of Gold,” and “Longest Drive.”

Mike Lightcap, a member of the Building Fund Committee, as well as a golfer that day, stated, “The Manor Golf Club was well prepared for the event. Everyone really enjoyed the day and it was exciting to be able to participate in the prize holes. I was hoping to win that new Jeep with a hole in one, but unfortunately I came away empty-handed. It was neat to see members from other Legions come out and support our golf outing. We really appreciated it.”

The golfers were also treated to hot dogs and refreshments throughout the day. Following all the rounds of golf, a catered meal was provided and a silent auction for gift baskets took place. Since the money raised from the golf outing is going towards the Building Fund for the Post, there was a good amount of volunteers that day and all the units were represented—Legionnaires, Sons, Auxiliary, Riders and Social Members. Everyone pulled together for a good cause, since enlarging the Post will benefit all the Units as well as the community.

The Building Fund Committee, a small but mighty group is made up of the following individuals: Jan Creitz, Starla Ewing, Dave Hart, Chrissy Kortze, Sharon and Mike Lightcap, and Keith Romig. Jan Creitz summed it up by saying, “We are so happy that it turned out so well. We had a great turn out and so many people said they couldn’t believe it was our first try at a golf outing. We didn’t have a long time to prepare, but all our hard work paid off and we are already looking forward to next year.”

Golfers, mark your calendars now, the second Annual Post 537 Golf Outing will be taking place on Saturday, May 18, 2019, at the Manor. You will not want to miss it! The Committee members have already begun organizing next year’s event, if anyone is interested in contributing or sponsoring please contact the Post at 610-286-5920 as all donations are greatly appreciated.
