EXETER >> Exeter Police welcomed their newest officer recently, and he’s ready to take a bite out of crime.

K-9 Officer Jax is the newest addition to the Exeter Police Department after completing certifications with his trainer, 24-year police veteran Officer Craig Downs, in North Carolina in the spring. Jax is a 2-year old Belgian Malinois/German Shepard mix and was born in Hlohovec, Slovakia, according to a post by Exeter Police.

Jax is the second K-9 addition to the department since K-9 Mako retired for health issues in September 2017. In April, the department welcomed K-9 Officer Iko, also a Belgian Malinois/German Shepard mix, to the department where he quickly began making an impression.

Dogs that work with the Exeter Police Department are all crossed-trained in patrol and either explosives or narcotics training. With a full force, Exeter Police K-9 Unit has two explosives detection dogs and two narcotics detection dogs. Both of the newest K9 officers have been trained in patrol and narcotics.
