Libraries present an infinite number of opportunities for people to learn in new and exciting ways. One of those ways is volunteering.

When school lets out each summer, the Kutztown Community Library offers the chance for teens to help gain real-world working experience. Not only is it beneficial for the library, but volunteers gain valuable job practice.

Those applying to be a teen volunteer are interviewed by Taylor Kutz, the Youth Librarian. They discuss personal interests and what makes them want to lend a hand at the library. Expectations are also reviewed, such as giving notice about arriving for shifts on time and job assignments. Duties range from shelving, assisting with programs, preparing supplies for Summer Quest and replenishing the Pop-Up Libraries around town.

“I am so thankful for my helpers. I always have a great group and they keep the busy summer months running smoothly,” says Kutz.

Fourteen-year-old Abby Miller has been volunteering for Kutztown Community Library for two years and says that she really enjoys working at the library. Miller stated that she was fascinated with the opportunity at the library because she would like to become a librarian one day.

“I like being able to help set up for the different activities. It’s nice for people to come here and be able to do things as a community,” Miller says.

To become a library volunteer, call Kutztown Community Library at 610-683-5820, stop in, or visit Kutztownlibrary.org. The library is located at 70 Bieber Alley, Kutztown.
