Berks County Parks and Recreation Department presents programs from kayaking under the stars to learning about bats and even painting with vinegar.
Full Moon FloatHave you ever kayaked under the stars, and watched the moon rise over the lake? At 7 p.m., Aug. 24 we’ll paddle part of the lake looking for wildlife and watch the night sky light up the water for the Full Moon Float at Blue Marsh Lake, Church Road parking area. Dress up your boat with glow-sticks for our color-fun contest! Participants can bring their own kayak or reserve one through Blue Marsh Outdoors, 610-488-5540, www.bluemarshoutdoors.com. The trip is for people with paddling experience, and is limited to 25 people. Program presented by a partnership with Blue Marsh Outdoors, U.S.A.C.E. Peach Pickin’ Basket WorkshopJust in time to make this basket to use while picking peaches in the orchard! From noon to 4 p.m. on Aug. 19, bring a bucket, flathead screwdriver, scissors, 10 spring clothes pins and towel to the Peach Pickin’ Basket Workshop held at the Berks County Heritage Center, 1102 Red Bridge Road, Reading (Bern Township). It’s All about BatsDr. Karen Campbell, professor of Biology at Albright College, returns to the Berks County Heritage Center, Bern Township, to present an illustrated lecture on bats from around the world as well as an update on the little brown bats that live here in the Red Bridge. Vinegar Painting WorkshopIn the early to mid-1800s, craftsmen decorated their furniture with colorful patterns using pigment dissolved in vinegar and different tools. On Aug. 25 from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the Berks County Heritage Center, we will create a variety of vinegar paint patterns on practice boards and a lidded tin. All supplies are provided. You may bring your own tools such as combs, feathers, paint brushes and sponges to create patterns. Registration and payment due by Aug. 17. Class is limited to 20 people.
