The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation Engineering District 5 announced that North Main Street will be closed and detoured for work to rehabilitate the bridge over Monocacy Creek in Amity Township, Berks County.
Beginning Tuesday, Aug. 8, and lasting through mid-November, Main Street will be closed and detoured between Monocacy Creek Road and Pennsylvania Avenue. Access will be maintained to all properties.
The posted detour utilizes Monocacy Creek Road, US 422, River Bridge Road, PA 724, PA 345 and Limekiln Road. Motorists should anticipate delays and use caution driving through the area.
Work on the project includes the rehabilitation of the masonry stone wall, drainage improvements and miscellaneous repairs.
This work is part an ongoing Reading Area Transportation Study Bridge Preservation and Repair Project to rehabilitate or repair 15 structures in Berks County. J.D. Eckman, Inc. of Atglen, PA. is the general contractor on the $6,827,834 contract, with work on all 15 bridges expected to be complete by July 2019.
The North Main Bridge is a steel stringer bridge originally constructed in 1932. It is 61 feet long, and 23 feet wide. This section of North Main Street has an average daily traffic volume of 5,368 vehicles.
