The 2018 Kutztown Day celebrated the community of Kutztown with food, sweets, music, activities, contests, Mini Golf, Bingo and more, all held at Kutztown Park on Aug. 5.

“The purpose is to celebrate the community of Kutztown, and has been since 1907,” said Kutztown Mayor Jim Schlegel.

Kutztown Day is traditionally held the first Sunday in August. Community camaraderie brings Kutztownians out to the event, said Schlegel. Many hold family reunions in the park during the event and come out to Kutztown Day every year to enjoy the activities, food and music.

“It’s a big picnic for Kutztown, that’s what it is,” said Schlegel. “There’s no rain in sight. Every year we have to worry about that but Mother Nature got it out of her system. All in all, it’s looking like to be a pretty fun day.”

Schlegel is past chair of the Kutztown Day Committee. His son Andy Schlegel is the current event chair.

“Even though this year’s numbers seemed down I thought the event went well,” said Andy Schlegel. “We had several community organizations there volunteering their time. If it wasn’t for all the people pumping water out of their basements and the heat, I think we would have seen more attendees.”

Schlegel said the Kutztown Day Committee has some changes in mind for next year to try and attract more people.

“We are also always looking for more volunteers to be on the committee. That being said, I would like to thank all of my committee members and various organizations for helping out. And I would also like to thank all of the local businesses that sponsored prizes for our raffle ticket.”

For twins Joslyn and Peytan Diffenbaugh, 10, Kutztown, the highlight of the day was winning a children’s bike in the raffle.

For Jacqueline Sharayko, Kutztown, and her children Caleb, 5; Laura, 11; and Grant, 8, they enjoyed frozen snow cones, playing on the playground and a round of Mini Golf.

“It’s fun to have the community get together and see people that I know and just do fun things with the kids in the summer,” said Sharayko. “We’re excited for the fireworks.”

“Beautiful weather, Oldies music, ice cream and the awesome playground” brought Andrew Macfarlane, Kutztown, and his sons Peter, 6, and Owen, 9, and their friend Ian Rapp, 8, Hamburg, out to Kutztown Park for Kutztown Day.

“It’s fun for the whole family,” said Kutztown Community Library Director Janet Yost about Kutztown Day while at the Mini Golf Course sponsored by the Kutztown Community Library. “We wanted to add something this year... the Mini Golf, that would be good for the kids and adults. It’s the first time and people are really enjoying it. They’ve all had a great time. Most people don’t score, they just want to play so that’s good, too. It’s a fun day.”

The Mini Golf served as a fundraiser for the library but only charged $1 for kids under age 10 and $2 for adults.

“We just want everybody to have a fun day,” said Yost.

The Mini Golf was sponsored by Michael and Lucy Muth, Eric and Georganne Moyer, The Hive, Kutztown Lions Club, and Alan J. Robertson Dentist.

Kutztown Day activities included KYAA baseball and softball games all day, fire safety activities by the Kutztown Fire Company, Kinner Cards by Kutztown Police, Bingo, KidSight Vision Screening sponsored by Kutztown Lions Club, Shoo-fly Pie Sale, Quoit Tournament, Cake Walk, children’s games, Amazing Eddie Magic Show, Thunderbolts performances, raffle, concerts by the Allentown Band for the 74th consecutive year, DJ music by Randy Schlegel, evening concert by Shadows of Thyme and concluded by fireworks.

The 2018 Kutztown Day sponsors were Kutztown Day Council, Kutztown Fire Company, Kutztown FOE, Kutztown Grange, Kutztown Lions Club, Kutztown Lioness Club, Kutztown Optimist Club, Kutztown Rotary Club, Kutztown Women’s Club, The Hobos, Kutztown Area Historical Society and Kutztown Area Teachers Association.
