Berks County Recorder of Deeds Frederick C. Sheeler, a lifetime resident of Berks County, has announced his candidacy for the State House of Representatives in the newly created 5th District in Berks.
Sheeler, currently serving his second term as Berks County’s Recorder of Deeds, was first elected to the position in 2007. He was reelected in 2011. He cites his experience in cutting waste at the local government level as something he wants to apply to the state position.
‘I have seen far too much waste in government and poor service to the people it is supposed to serve. I put a stop to that in the Recorder’s Office, and I want to move the State in that same direction,’ Sheeler said.
Sheeler, who holds a BS degree in business administration from Kutztown University, is a former banker specializing in agricultural and personal lending. He spent 15 years as a small business owner in Hamburg.
Sheeler has served for 17 years on the Disability Rights Committee at the Hamburg Center, which is operated by the State Department of Public Welfare, serving the last seven years as a member of the board of trustees and the last three years as the board president. ‘My experience at the Hamburg Center has given me a unique outside perspective into the operations of State government,’ said Sheeler.
As past president of the Northern Berks Chamber of Business and Industry, he helped found the Hamburg Main Street Program, which is still a model for small town revitalization.
The new 5th State House District encompasses the townships of Alsace, Bern, Bethel, Centre, Precincts 1, 5 and 9 of Exeter, Jefferson, Maidencreek, Marion, Ontelaunee, Penn, Ruscombmanor, Tulpehocken, Upper Bern, Upper Tulpehocken, and the boroughs of Bernville, Centerport, Fleetwood, Leesport, Strausstown and Womelsdorf.
‘I really love the make up of this district,’ Sheeler said. ‘It is tied together by some of the friendliest small towns in this part of the state; and I look forward to representing these people of the new 5th State House District in Berks County.’
