The Berks County Borough Association is a new association formed with the goal of advancing and improving Berks County boroughs.

Mayor of Mohnton Gary Kraft, new President of the Berks County Boroughs Association, spoke to New Morgan Borough Council during their March 11 meeting, recruiting new members.

‘A similar organization became a social club,’ Kraft said. ‘A group of about 15 or 20 representatives got together from boroughs across Berks County. We have to get it relevant if we are to succeed. The goal is to establish programs to benefit your borough.’

The group will meet during the last week of the month to avoid other public meetings which are mostly set in the beginning of the month.

‘The hour-long meeting will include common business initiatives, speakers and representatives from PennDOT,’ said Kraft. ‘The new transportation bill will be considered. There will be opportunities to ask questions and get answers.’

The next meeting is planned for March 31 at 6:30 p.m. at Albright College.

‘I invite you all to come and find out what we are all about,’ said Kraft. ‘A membership of $50 a year would permit anyone from council to come. You would have one vote. You will receive a folder to keep things organized. There will be helpful tips to add value to all those who participate. There will be a roster of all public officials provided.’

‘Will training be available?’ asked Caroline Williams, new Morgan Borough Manager.

If necessary there will be training said Kraft.

‘Some of the topics planned are borough code enforcement, the current financial market and what influences it, foreclosures and abandoned properties. We will try to make it relevant. There will be five or six topics during the year. You are welcome to become a member,’ said Kraft.

In other news, New Morgan Borough Council approved a resolution to adopt a standard plan to deal with hazardous situations. The plan ‘allows the Borough to get grants,’ said Williams.

Chris Weber was appointed to a two year term on the Industrial Development Authority.

Connie Weber was appointed to a two year term on the Utilities Authority.

Williams said she recently received a correspondence from the Berks County Board of Elections to verify the polling location for borough residents.

In February there were one and a half billable hours for police protection for New Morgan Borough said Williams. The Caernarvon Berks County Police Department provides protection for the borough.

A H2O Grant for about $650,000 was received in conjuncture with Caernarvon Township to develop a public water system, said Williams.
