Some frosty temperatures and a little bit of snow is no excuse for not getting off the couch and stepping into the great outdoors. To get you moving, the Berks County Parks and Recreation Department and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers/Blue Marsh Lake have joined forces to present winter programs on snowshoeing and cross-country skiing.

Family Fun Day – Snowshoeing for Beginners is planned for Saturday, Jan. 25, beginning at 1 p.m., at the Day Use Area, 1268 Palisades Drive, Bern Township.

For those interested in learning how to snowshoe, the Jan. 25 program is perfect for beginners. And, believe it or not, snow is an option!

Participants will learn shoe sizes, fit, and how to move in snowshoes. All ages can join in the fun. Snowshoes may be rented at Buckman’s Ski Shop, Muhlenberg Township, by calling 610-678-5960 or visiting www.buckmans.com. Participants may bring their own.

Register by Tuesday, Jan. 21, by calling 610-374-2944.

A Cross-Country Ski/Hike is set for Saturday, Feb. 1, at 1 p.m., also at the Day Use Area.

Berks Parks and Blue Marsh Lake staffers will lead the Feb. 1 Cross-Country Ski/Hike which will take full advantage of the beautiful Blue Marsh trails. This program is for all levels of skiers – and there will be a few hills. Should there be no snow cover, everyone will take a hike. Either way, it will be a fun Saturday afternoon and will surely help you shake that mid-winter cabin fever.

Cross-country skis can be rented at Buckman’s or participants may bring their own.

To register, call 610-374-2944 by Tuesday, Feb. 4.
