They say time flies when a person is having fun. For Janet Knauer, this has been the case for quite a while. Knauer recently completed 50 years of service to Saint Paul’s UCC’s Sunday School program, a milestone she says has been enjoyable to reach.

“It has been fun,” said Knauer. “I just like being with the kids. There came a point where I said, ‘what’s another ten years?’ Before I knew it, fourty-five years rolled around and I figured, why not hold out for another five?”

Knauer was first introduced to the program during high school, when a friend asked her to take over a class that she had been overseeing.

“She was having trouble getting to [the kids],” said Knauer. “She thought I might be better for the job so I decided to give it a try.”

Since then, Knauer has had no problem connecting with the children.

“The kids are all very nice,” said Knauer. “It is great when they really get to know you. Then you have parents coming up to you and telling you how much their children enjoy [Sunday School]. That feels good.”

Knauer remains unsure how long she will continue to contribute to the program, but she currently has no plans to leave.

“It is always a privilege and an honor to work with these kids and spread god’s word,” said Knauer. “I will probably keep helping out for as long as I’m able. It wouldn’t really seem like a Sunday without it.”
