Rotary News: Kutztown, Brandywine seniors named March Students of Month

The Kutztown Rotary Club awarded Samantha Sweigert and Jordan Kemp its Student of the Month award in ceremonies at the Kutztown Tavern March 12.

The award is given each month to a senior from Kutztown Area High School and from Brandywine Heights High School that have been selected by guidance counselors in recognition of scholarship, community service and student activities contributions.

Samantha Sweigert is a senior at Brandywine Heights High School and lives in Mertztown with her parents, Ron and Shelly Sweigert.

She has been a member of the National Honor Society for the past two years, is a member of the Key Club and the Spanish Club. She has been awarded distinguished honors from ninth through twelfth grade.

As a member of the softball team, she was given the Tamera Fink and Beth Trexler Award for highest softball and scholastic achievement. She has been selected team MVP, elected as captain of her tournament team and for the Carpenter Cup. She will be attending Lafayette College on an athletic scholarship.

During her free time, Sweigert tutors at the Brandywine Elementary School, does community volunteer work as part of the National Honor Society, assists at the Longswamp Playground in the summer and babysits.

Jordan Kemp is a senior at Kutztown Area High School and lives in Kutztown. He is the son of Tamie and Shane Kemp.

He has been student representative to the school board, participated in the Academic Challenge, Student Council, Model Senate with Sen. Judy Schwank and was elected Class of 2012 Treasurer. He has also participated in the boys’ basketball team, the Outdoors Club, the Leo Club, the Debate Team, the chorus and musical.

In the community, Kemp has participated in the school blood drive, volunteered for Friend, Inc. and the Relay for Life. In the summers, he works as grounds keeper for the Kutztown Fair.
