The Kutztown Rotary Club honored seniors Karl Velik and Darby Andre as students of the month for May in ceremonies at the Kutztown Tavern May 7.
The award is given each month to students from Kutztown Area and Brandywine Heights High Schools that have been nominated by guidance counselors in recognition of their accomplishments in scholarship, community service and student activities.
Karl Velik is a senior at Kutztown Area High School and is the son of Michael and Melissa Velik of Kutztown. He has been active in Chorus, Show Choir, Vocal Jazz Ensemble, Poetry Club, Music Honor Society and was captain of the Academic Challenge. He also helped organize the 2014 Berks Poetry Festival.
Velik is a year round columnist and journalist for the Reading Eagle ‘Voices’ section and works part time at Arby’s locally.
Darby Andre is a senior at Brandywine Heights High School and is the daughter of Kelly and Michael Andre of Fleetwood. At school she has been active in Marching Band, Fife and Drum Corps, for which she has served as lieutenant and captain, Concert Band, Student Council and National Honor Society. She has performed in County Band and Orchestra, County and District Band and has served as Vice President of Band Council.
In the community, Andre has been active in fund raising for the American Heart Association. Over the years she and her family have raised over $100,000 for pediatric cardiac research.
During the summer, she did an internship with the Gateway Ticketing System.
