What began as mere seedlings and soil is now springing into possibilities for the community.
Trinity Church of Boyertown decided to launch a community garden last year. The patch of the land on the church’s property has been dedicated a place to grow food-a decision that seeks to benefit the church as well as the community.
‘The garden is for the people of the community,’ said Jackie Iatesta, Parish Community Nurse. ‘Those people who can’t have a garden, for whatever reason, can claim a little spot; we can help them.’ She then referenced a woman she had spoken with who hadn’t has a tomato sandwich in years, something Iatesta hopes to change.
Church members dedicated the garden on Sunday, June 1, by planting onion seeds and sharing in a prayer. Adults worked side by side with the children to plant the seeds, teaching them the ways of gardening.
‘It’s about giving, and learning,’ she said, particularly in reference to the children.
The garden features tomatoes, cucumbers, squash, onions, a pumpkin patch and purple beans. The purple beans turn green when cooked, which Iatesta says the children greatly enjoy.
The event concluded with an open invitation for folks to check on the garden’s progress or get involved by volunteering.
