The seventh annual Relay For Life of Boyertown filled the park with hope and life last weekend.
This was the first year the event took place in the park, shifting from its previous location at the high school stadium.
Ashley Solazzo, who co-chaired this year’s event with Jody Fink, said the park offered a better ‘relay vibe,’ and was a family-friendly environment.
As of Monday, June 23, more than $190,00 was raised according to Solazzo-and they’re still counting. This year’s goal is $220,000. Relay teams have until Aug. 31 to continue fund raising; Sept. 1 will mark a new Relay season.
The event lasted for 24 hours at the Boyertown Community Park, beginning the morning of Saturday, June 21, and concluding on Sunday with one last walk around the park. The theme this year was Melodies of Hope.
Funds raised throughout the weekend go directly to the American Cancer Society. According to the organizers, a good portion of that money stays right here in Berks County and is used throughout the Boyertown and Oley Valley communities. The rest goes towards cancer research throughout the country. The purpose of Relay For Life of Boyertown is to save lives and create more birthdays.
As the high school will still be under construction next year, Solazzo expects the year to take place in the park for at least another year or two.
